|
She is the Old Woman who lives in a hidden place that everyone knows in their souls but few have ever seen. The sole work of La Loba is the collecting of bones. Her cave is filled with the bones of all desert creatures, but her specialty is wolves. When she has assembled an entire skeleton she sits by the fire and thinks about what song she will sing. And when she is sure, she stands over the criatura, raises her arms over it, and sings out. The more La Loba sings, the more of the creature comes into being; its tail curls upward, shaggy and strong. The wolf creature begins to breathe. La Loba sings so deeply that the floor of the desert shakes, the wolf opens its eyes, leaps up, and runs away down the canyon. condensed from Women Who Run With the Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estes I discovered Clarissa Pinkola Estes about 10 years ago when I read Women Who Run with the Wolves. What a blessing. This book, which so helped me to understand the nature of my soul, forever changed me. Utilizing old archetypes and folk tales, Estes was able to tap deep into my psyche, illuminating personal and universal psychological truths. Her insights furthered my artistic journey, allowing me to delve creatively into places that I was too fearful or unconscious to face before. Although technique and practice were still greatly important to me, discovering the natural ability of my soul to create took precedence. With my sister Mara, a writer, and guidance from our dear friend Michelle McGauchie, we decided we wanted to share these processes with both artists and non-artists alike. Fran Bouwman "Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D. (born 27 January 1945) is an American poet, psychoanalyst and post-trauma specialist who was raised in a now nearly vanished oral and ethnic tradition. She grew up in a rural village, population 600, near the Great Lakes. Of Mexican mestiza and Magyar heritages, she comes from immigrant and refugee families who could not read or write, or who did so haltingly. Similar to William Carlos Williams and other poets who worked in the health professions, Estés is a certified psychoanalyst who has practiced clinically for 37 years. Her doctorate, from the Union Institute & University, is in ethno-clinical psychology, the study of social and psychological patterns in cultural and tribal groups. She often speaks as "distinguished visiting scholar" and "diversity scholar" at universities. She is the author of many books on the life of the soul, and her work is published in 32 languages. Her book, Women Who Run With the Wolves was on the New York Times Best Seller list for 145 weeks." -Wikipedia |
